TharnType (Thai Series)

This series is definitely without a doubt one of the better Thai BL series I have seen. The range of character graph that this series shows has not been done before (at least of the shows that I have seen, and without a doubt there are plenty of those that I am still yet to see). Yes, at the heart of it , this is a love story between the oddest couple. It takes time to grow on you and a lot of episodes are used up in creating their hate to friendship to love. The big moments come only in the last 3 episodes which also add to a thrill element to this series and takes it to another level. And yes, there is plenty of kissing and that too proper one. Unlike most other Asian series that I have seen in the past which will go as far as just lips on lips.

Type is a college student, who shares his room with the music student Tharn and they hit it off really well. Because of a trauma from childhood Type has sworn to hate everything gay for lifetime. When he finds out that Tharn is gay, he tries his best to change his room but he can't. Eventually he grows on to like Tharn and as expected they start a relationship. This is after, Type tries to date a girl but fails when it comes to sex and realizes he is into Tharn. Their love grows over a period of time but Type is not ok to make their relationship public. Only Techno, who is Type's closest friend knows about them. Lhong, who happens to be Tharn's best friend forever also is not aware of this. Over the course multiple misunderstandings happen but the love continues to grow. The guy who was the first guy whom Tharn had sex with comes into picture, first to create misunderstandings between them, eventually making their love stronger. Things get much worse when Tharn's last ex-bf Tar comes into the picture. Tar continues to follow Tharn after a year of their breakup wanting him back. This causes further rift between Type and Tharn and they break up. We know something fishy is behind all this. And finally we get to know the secret Tar is sharing, why he is behaving the way he is, and who is the real culprit who is trying their best to break this couple apart. Eventually, Tharn and Type fix their broken relationship and finally get the ideal relationship they both wanted.

There is a lot of good in this show but a lot of weird situations too. The kind of hatred Type initially shows for Tharn and gays for general is aggravating. Of course, when we eventually find a reason behind it, you empathize better. But his character eventually grows. Type is shown as foul mouthed, who just says what he does, is unapologetic about it. Tharn on the other side is always looking for love and is soft spoken guy who loves music and for some reason is extremely attracted to Type. I will never understand why and how a openly gay man would wanna go into a relationship where the partner is always saying everything negative about gays in general. Anyway, yes Type grows over a period of time and acknowledges that he doesn't understand things as a whole but he only knows that he likes Tharn. The story of bringing in Tharn's first sexual experience guy seemed like a force filler just to bring in some conflict and to bring the two guys together. A bigger event happens when Tar comes into the picture. Every episode Tar is shown but there is an enigma around him. He has a trauma that he is dealing with and his brother has been taking care of him very closely. Tharn says that Tar broke his heart by breaking up. But we are only told later how it is Lhong all along who has been using everyone to get Tharn to like him as a lover. He apparently had even hired guys to rape a child in 10th grade (Tar) and blackmail him to breakup with Tharn and he uses Tar again to come back in Tharn's life so that he can make him break up with Type as well. The one good thing is Techno provides good fun and comic relief throughout the show. I found him slightly annoying in the first few episodes but he grew up on me eventually. He made some good funny faces and as you can expect some OTT reactions but were fun after a point. Tharn and Type make an excellent pair. Handsome, great chemistry and very much in love. With more than enough kissing scenes , and lingering moments of them looking at each other, they complemented each other very well. I have to admit that Tharn smiled way too much every time Type did anything and it started to get in my nerves but what can you do. Unlike other shows, I am happy that they did not randomly start to focus on 2-3 more couple on the side just to get the story going.

TharnType is an interesting yet complicated couple but the show had its charms. At 12 episodes of almost 50-60 minutes, it does take time to watch the whole thing. Overall it is a satisfying experience, if by now, you have become used to watching Thai BL shows, like I have. (7/10)

I believe the excellent present perfect 1&2 paved the way for Thai shows. Or did they really, since they are so good. And especially this one. I have grown really fond of Asian material and I will search your blog for more ideas. I don't want to say more about this one to avoid spoilers, I will just say I had a really great time, that I was moved by Tharn in an unusual way and that sensitive people will not be able to hold their tears. There is still good stuff on TV, and this one is a true gem.

I think the Thai BL shows have been a phenomenon even before the Present Perfect movies. But they are an interesting mix. SOme are decent, some good and others just bad. As you agree, this one is one of the good ones. I am trying to see if i get info on some the good ones so that I can watch them first before some of t he bad ones. lol

There are a few more good Thai series that you will find here on the blog.
Thank you, I will check this. Imagine how glad I was to find out there are two more episodes and a season 2!! The rest of my week is gonna be so busy after work!

I'm really happy I read your review before I started watching this show, else I would have probably dismissed it after the first episode, and missed something I am loving now. The reason I wanted to quit is a recurring problem in BL that made me quit a lot of them before (and avoid the genre some years ago): the lack of consent. No, kissing and taking advantage of Type's body when he is asleep is not ok. And adding a romantic music or a pseudo reason to do it doesn't make it less creepy and outrageous. Also there is Tharn unexplained attraction to homophobic Type (they should have shown more that the 2 guys were good friends before). Another point that disturbed was Tar who seems too young. And last but not least: Type offering Tharn to sleep with him so that he doesn't owe him anything wtf seriously? That's for the very bad parts. Because when their relation begins to grow, the show becomes amazing. Their relation is maggnetic. Tharn being able to see through Type's foulmouth, Type slowly opeing up and being the strongest of the 2 in the end, willing to sacrifice so that Tharn will be happy... It was so well done. The kiss Type gives to Tharn when on the side of the bed showing his true feelings for the first time will stay with me for a long time. I will watch season 2 asap!!

I agree with everything that you have mentioned. Type offering Tharn to sleep with him so that he doesn't owe him anything was really a fucked up thing. I cant thhink of anyone who would do that.
Am glad that eventually you got into it.
Each and every of these shows have weird aspects and I am starting to believe it partly has to do with Asian culture. Moreover, when u come to think of it, Tharn's intention is pure, and touching his friend's body in his sleep, although not ok, just shows how madly in love he is. Also Type offering to sleep with Tharn is just a way for him to give in to his inner desire without losing his face or admitting he wants it. Proof is it was just supposed to happen once, and it didn't take long to happen again.. what bothered me more was Tharn being too sweet... How can any human being stand such a rejecting jerk as Type, be hurt so many times and never get mad ? Of course he's desperately in love but such a lack of self esteem is beyond believable in my opinion.
That being said, it is still my favorite show ever. My first BL is like my first love, it will always have this special place in my heart.

I hear you. The first ones are always the special one.

I don't know abour Thai bl, but there is definitely a culture difference with japanese bl, coming from yaoi manga. The main thing is yaoi are designed not for gays but written by girls for girls and have very specific codes. Like the uke and zeke thing that is different than just top and bottom, and the "rape thing" being more common, seen as a manifestation of raw desire. Japansese girls sure have a very special way of imagining us lol (and get excited in weird ways... sometimes I wonder if they have actually met real gays). Although I enjoy reading it in manga because it's fictional, I've always had trouble seeing it in dramas where characters are "real". But once again, I'm not the targeted audience. Still the thing I love about bl series is that they usually have beautiful love description and evolution. And a happy ending. It's our very own Disney movies lmao.
For the first "have sex with me", I didn't see it that way back then but Gerald I thing you're probably right. Thank you, you just gave me an excuse to watch the show again (yes i'm totally addicted to it, the leads are just too handsome and incredible together XD).
Ah ah, I needed no excuse to watch it three times already. I'm like obsessed with Type and Tharn, especially the latter who's the perfect manga character brought to life, with his wide eyes, his perfect hair and his cute smile. And yes the chemistry between these two is the best ever, in terms of intensity, it's unmatched. I feel like a teenager again when watching this, and the break up scene will always make me cry because we all lived a moment like this one when a beloved one left us and our world collapsed, leaving us with a broken heart we thought nothing or noone would ever be able to mend.

Totally addicted you said ? That makes two of us !

I watched this one last summer and have to agree on many details you've mentioned here. No, it's not OK to touch or kiss a sleeping person like that and the first NC scene in the shower was so out of character for Tharn that only Mame can write such situations into a script. And - though I'm pretty good at noticing details myself - some detail detectives found that Type had some books by Mame on his desk. Meh? I'm not familiar with all of Mame's work, maybe she has written something besides BL-books, otherwise it would be really confusing - why would a homophobic dude have her books (plural) on his desk. And in the S2 there was a message on the screen saying that "this kind of behavior is wrong" when the gossip-dude was using a plastic tube to listen in to his neighbors' conversation. Fuck a duck?! Eavesdropping is not OK, but sleep abuse is fine?! When did the world get that twisted?

One thing that drags me to rewatch this series is Type being a human cat. Anyone who has lived with a cat has been through the same situations - came home to find the place completely trashed, tried their hardest to offer the furry god(dess) something pleasant to eat and failed miserably most of the times, had claw marks on their body because the furry god(dess) decided to prove a point etc. And then the selfsame cat curls up next to you, comes to comfort you when you're sick or sad and most importantly - stands up furiously for you when someone plans to harm you. Yes, cats are assholes - and we love them :D

Type showing Tharn what a person Lhong really is and what's he up to this time is 200% feline. My own first cat did that with a few people and I'm forever thankful for her... sacrifice. She got cursed and scolded by my narc ex when he found her sleeping in the sleeve of his jacket - but I got the message. A man is as big as the smallest thing that drives him berserk. A cat in the sleeve, really, P?! Some cat hairs have never hurt anyone, chrissake. She got some serious injuries (probably from a fight) when my relatives didn't bother to wait for her in our country home and they just left her outside. They were by car, they didn't have to catch a once-a-day bus. They should have waited for her. I've never been so furious in my life and I cursed the whole family with all I had. And wrote them out of my life. One of the last things she did was eating fish from the palm of "my" empath. She never ate from a human's palm so I was totally stunned watching that :D When I came back from my trip to Spain, the empath just came to help with the suitcase, but the cat ran to him instead of me - the way she was circling the perfect eternity signs around his feet while holding my gaze - I got the message. 22 years later: she was right.

So I was reliving those moments when Type executed his plan and luckily had some helpful friends while trying to help Tharn see the Lhong-situation for what it was. Seriously, I was waiting for Type to purr or meow or hiss like a cat, the feline vibe he had was so genuine :D Especially when Tharn touched his belly sometimes and had such a victorious expression on his face - that's a cat owner alright. Most cats don't like that and such gesture will end with serious claw marks. Oh, Type did hiss once, at the breakfast table in the cafeteria :D
My favorite scene was probably in the last episode when Type apologizes for "leaving" Tharn. The way he says "Listen carefully. Only saying this once. Not repeating. I love you... you asshole, Tharn," it's SO feline :) Tharn crying after that was not written in the script, it's Mew crying and Gulf comforting him. Lovely they kept it in the final version.

There were so many nice details, like Thanya playing a tune on the piano that sounds very much like one Estonian children's song. Or Tharn wearing a Guns n'Roses T-shirt. Or the bickering of Type and Techno (and the way their soccer shirts always matched). Addicts - got room for one more :D ?

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who

Ultimate masturbation: Shigoki no yama (Japanese) [The Ultimate Masturbation]

I would never know what was the point behind making this film. Was it supposed to be a comedy, cos it wasn't. It wasn't even porn. It was just a silly attempt at making something absolutely senseless and ridiculous. The story, as well as direction is equally shoddy. You could laugh for having seen something so bad, but I wouldn't call that comedy. An old man runs a camp about gay masturbation. The explanation given is that gays masturbate for pleasure unlike straight men, for whom the act is seen as shame or because they can't find a woman. One day a straight man shows up and wants to join the camp for his thesis. After discussion, he is allowed in. Rules include that you can masturbate together, you can masturbate one another, but there is no fellatio or anal sex. Some students of course breaks rule. The teacher then talks about 2 forms of masturbation which gives ultimate pleasure. He shows one without touching and then refuses to talk of the other. Somehow suddenly,
