Started in 2007 to keep a track of gay films that I watched, this blog has come much further than I had planned. There are tons of movies that I need to watch and review here. Through this blog, I want to give you genuine, my personal heart-felt review of the films that I see. These are my personal thoughts and opinions about the films and I would love to hear your thoughts on these films as well. I always reply to comments in a day or two. Please help me make my blog more popular by becoming a member, following it and by recommending it to your friends. As far as I know this is one of the very very few gay movie review blogs where reviews are not linked or copy-paste imdb summary. Enjoy and do keep writing your feedback.

Three of Hearts

Ok, so this is not a gay film. Its about lesbian lovers but you would not want to categorize this movie under that genre as well. It can as well be termed as a romantic movie with lesbianism involved. Not that watching lesbians making love is my idea but what the heck, a film is a film is a film.

The film starts with Connie and Ellen, a lesbian couple breaking up. Ellen wants to move out because she needs to think and sort out things in her mind. You can instantly make out that she is confused about her bi-sexuality. Joe is a male escort whom Connie hires to meet her family at her sister's wedding since she had promised them that she will have her fiance meeting them (hoping to go with Ellen). Joe and Ellen end up becoming friends after that and come up with the idea of maybe Joe making Ellen fall in love with him, break her heart and so Ellen will come back to Connie. Meanwhile, an acquaintance has gotten out of prison and seeks to put a hurt Joe, blaming him for his prison sentence. Joe succeeds in making Ellen fall for him but in the process realizes that he is falling for Ellen and decides to stop hustling and be true to her. But before he could do anything, the guy from jail gets to him, beats him up and he is in hospital. Thats when the truth comes out by Connie to Ellen about Joe. Ellen is heart broken, but the incident makes Connie realize that Ellen is not in love with her. Rather she loves Joe but is hurt but whatever happened. Ultimately everything is fine and Ellen and Joe are together.

The movie was simple with decent performances. Joe is hot with capital H. The scene where Ellen says, "Who are you? You cook like a chef and you look like a movie star.", I thought was so true. Ellen was charming. My problem was with Connie's character. Her dressing was so over the top. The tried so hard t make her look like a dyke but I felt it was a sore thumb. Plus she was made to look obsessive to the extent to following her ex.

But otherwise, its a decent watch. Nothing great but good faces to see. :) (5.5/10)

East Side Story

After a long time , I again saw a funny romantic gay movie that I liked. These are the kind of movies which I prefer watching any time. They make you laugh, feel emotional with the characters and stir that romantic feeling inside you.

Diego is a Latin guy living with his grandma in east LA. He helps his grandma run the Mexican restaurant that she owns. Diego dreams of getting out of LA someday and opening up his own restaurant. He is seeing this closet real estate agent Pablo for over a year. Diego wants to take this relationship further by living in but Pablo is too freaked out to accept reality. They break up. Meanwhile Diego's aunt Bianca comes in the picture and starts having an affair with Pablo. Oh! did I mention that she is the funniest character in the movie. Meanwhile, a new gay couple movies in the neighborhood and people find out that Diego is gay too. This starts affecting the restaurant business. The gay couple Wesley and Jonathan have a troubled relationship which is evident when Diego says to Wesley that "You are stuck in it and you can't get out. Accept it.". Wesley and Diego have obvious feelings for each other but it cannot go anywhere. On the other side when Pablo decided to marry Bianca, Diego tells her the entire truth and she runs away. Jonathan tries all evil things to keep Wesley on his side including insulting Diego whenever possible, which ultimately makes him and Wesley break up. he movie ends in a happy note with the restaurant renovation, doing good business and Diego and Wesley coming together.

Performance wise everyone has done a good job. There were plenty of shirtless scenes to tilt you including a few good kissing scenes. Its unbelievable that a absolute hot guy like Diego has no fiends. He really is very cute. The chemistry between Diego and his grandma is amazing and heart warming.

A definite watch for some cute boys and a romantic comedy love story. (7/10)

A Very Natural Thing

From the looks etc of the film, it would not be wrong to say that this movie must have been among the first ones to come out depicting gay life style and culture and gay sexual liberation. The movie is set in 70's and it is very interesting to see the way people dressed, cars they drove, their lifestyle and many more things.

David is a teacher who was an ex-monk. He meets a hot guy Mark in a club one night and they hook up. They start going out and have a good time. David is this guy who has all these romantic notions about all relationships while Mark is the guy who just wants to live in moment and enjoy all these moments with David. Its evident they both like each other and enjoy each other a lot. Soon David moves in with Mark. Things are all fine until slowly the differences with respect to expectations from the relationship stat to come in. Mark is younger and is somehow prone to commitment. He wants to explore other sexual encounters. David tries to keep with Mark because he loves him but then things slowly just keep getting worse and one day tired of all this David walks out heartbroken. David and Mark meet again but its very clear that all Mark wants is sex but David can't have anything that doesn't have a meaning attached to it. They grow apart for good. Later at the NY gay parade David meets a guy Jason and they hook up and start enjoying each other's company. They spend weekends together and hang out, till one day when Jason asks David to live in together. This time David refuses because he does not want to do the same mistake that happened with Mark earlier. They talk and David asks Jason to just enjoy, live in moment, be committed to each other because living together only complicates the situation. Towards the end, its shown that the two guys are just having a wonderful time at beach without thinking too much about what the future has in store for them. Just enjoy their present. And thats the scene in movie poster.

There are 2 ways to look at this movie depending on what our personal perspective is. From David's point of view who wants to do every single thing with his partner and looks for that ideal romantic life which probably exists only in books or from Mark's point of view who wants to be committed but is afraid because he wants to explore more options. I can at some point relate to both and feel what they individually felt.

For me the movie was ok. It did not stand for one particular point. A regular fare (5/10)

Amnesia: The James Brighton Enigma (Canada - French/English)

There are 2 important words in the film title 'amnesia' and 'enigma' and so rightly because while watching the movie, a viewer is in state of confusion between facts and fiction, the imitation of real life story to on screen story. Inspired by a true incident, this film adds on more substance and build s a fine film around it.

One morning a young nude lad is found in a deserted lot in Montreal. He is taken to the hospital by the cops where they find that he is total amnesiac and doesn't remember anything about his previous life except the fact that he is gay and believes that his name is James Brighton. He builds a very close bond with the lady doctor treating him. They together with the help of gay hotline try and search for his identity but with no luck. He starts living with a gay guy trying to be normal but of course frustrated with the fact that he cannot remember anything. The viewer is left confused as to whether James is really amnesiac or hiding something. One day police finds out that he is actually Matthew Honeycutt and he actually was running from his family in US. His mom comes and picks him up and James tries to bring his life back to normal and thats how the film ends. Apparently in real life, the guy still hasn't got back his memory. The movie moves forward through the eyes of Sylvie, a criminology student, who finds James Brighton story very good for thesis. The movie shows why James think who he is and what actually happened but like I mentioned earlier , since all that is shown through dreams and nightmares that James gets, you really don't know if that was all imagination or that really was the actual reason.

Acting wise it was a great job done by the main character. He acted and portrayed his emotions so well. You as a viewer feel for him and don't even want to imagine yourself in his shoes. Few scenes go back n forth in past and present that sometimes, its difficult to keep track and the movie gets a little difficult.

Definitely worth seeing for a different story and treatment. (6/10)

Straightman

A first time attempt by the actor director, this film was just about ok. It according to me was a film more about friendship between 2 guys one of which happens to be gay rather than the whole gay life style story. As a first attempt, it was only a decent outcome.

Jack lives with his girlfriend and is a worker in some factory. His best friend David works in a comedy club and has this thing of flirting with girls all the time and hooking up with them. As the movie progress. its shown how the 2 friends are very close o each other and how Jack's girlfriend is frustrated with lessening interest of Jack in her. She ultimately decides to leave him and doesn't even get a angry reaction from Jack. After this incident Jack and David move in together after renting a place in suburbs of Chicago since it would be cheap. Now we are suddenly shown Jack playing around with men. This comes just suddenly. As a viewer you are thinking how and when did this all start. There is no explanation provided. In one of the many discussions, Jack comes out to David and David is shown pretty cool about it. That was a good scene when Jack comes out and then David asks "Does it mean you are not gonna help me out in picking up girls?". I thought that was casual and subtle. What follows is just conflicts between 2 friends in which they try to understand each other, take care of each other and also leading their gay and straight life respectively. Jack is shown more confusing because he wants to get in a relationship and is not able to do so. Eventually David also just wants to get settled on his own with someone and does not wanna just flirt anymore. Finally the friends part and just move on to their separate ways.

This kind pf ending to a movie was a little confusing to me. By the time movie ends, I was confused behind the intention of this movie. Acting wise, its just an ok job done by both lead characters. Very low production values and an ok story does little justice to the entire premise.

Watch it only if you have nothing else to do. Keep remote next to you to keep fast forwarding. (4.5/10)

Prom Queen : The Mark Hall Story (Canada)

My second time watching this movie and I must admit that it was equally exciting to watch it again. This one apparently is based on a true story that happened in Canada. If thats true then I have to really salute Mark Hall for all his courage.

In a fictional small town live Mark Hall, a happy go lucky teenage kid who is popular in school and who has managed to avoid the typical harassment a gay kid in a small town would expect to face. It's the time for school prom and he wants to being his boyfriend with him, but the catholic school dismisses it saying it is against catholic and religious rules. He has best friend like Carly who supports him throughout and even says that she wont attend prom if he cannot . Carly's boyfriend is in with her to support and does his best what he can for Mark. At this stage Mark decided to come out to his family who surprisingly he finds out have always known. Hence start the fight against the school officials to allow Mark to attend the prom. The story becomes talk of the town and a gay activist lawyer helps to support his case in court. Marc agrees to challenge the school/church stance. Even though all of us know what would be the result but the way n which Mark presents his case is very touching. His boyfriend Jason gets frustrated at one point because suddenly from being no one he is being recognized by each and every one and he just wants to be normal. BUt the love between the two is so strong that they are always together. Ultimately Mark Hall does go to the prom.

My favorite scene is the climax when Mark's dad tells him that any father would be proud to have a son like him. This especially makes sense in the movie because they have shown how MArk's father had always been in short of words to say anything to Mark. Mark's mother is shown very courageous and all supportive of his son. The school scenes are comic and interesting and acting was all decent. Mark has been portrayed with such cuteness, innocence and freshness. I particularly found his boyfriend Jason very cute.

You should definitely see this movie. It just might remind you of your days when you had a few challenges on your life just because you were gay. (7/10)

An Angel Named Billy

This is one of those movies which are dragged for no reasons. Some of the characters are stretched for no reasons. Like the whole introduction of Billy and his dad was not required. Anyways, its a simple story otherwise.

Billy has an alcoholic father. One day he sees Billy kissing his friend and he throws him out of home since he is gay. Billy lands up in LA. There he meets Guy working in a cafe who helps him for a couple of days and becomes his friend. Billy find an ad for a job where James is looking for a help for his dad Mark kAnderson, a recent victim of stroke. Since James is usually busy with his assignments, he wants someone to take care of his dad. Mark is straight but his best friend is your over the top drag queen Thomas. James is gay too and has a troubled relationship with his ex since his ex was a drug addict. He is lonely and looking for love. Billy starts working and charms everyone with his hard work and dedication. James start falling for him and they become lovers. Mark dies and Billy and James get married.

Simple story. Not much to offer except that the acting was very very amateurish, specially James. He was so fake and kind of annoying. Billy was ok. There is not much I wanna say more about the movie.

Strictly ok. Not much to offer in any terms. (5/10)

The Dying Gaul

Oh what a movie! Even though the climax of the movie left me a little confused, I still cannot deny the fact that it was a brilliantly made film. The casting, the acting, the story, the filming; everything was almost perfect.

Robert is a screenplay writer whose script "The Dying Gaul" is being appreciated by a few studious. At one such meeting he meets Jeffery from a big production house who wants to buy his script. The script has been inspired by Robert's boyfriend who died of Aids. Jeffery and others love the script but he can buy the script only if Robert changes the gay guy to be a woman because as per him Americans "hate gays". Robert refuses initially but later gives in when Jeffery proposes one million dollar for the script with the changes. Robert after hesitation gives in because he plans to invest that money for his son (from the days he was married). Robert now starts visiting Jeffrey house where he meets Elaine, Jeffery wife and mother of 2 kids. Theirs is a happy family until we are shown that Jeffery is flirting with Robert which later he gives into and the two start having an affair. On the other hand, Elaine connects to Robert on a more intellectual and emotional level and does not want Robert to change his script. One one such occasions she also finds out that Robert is so lonely that he ends up spending most of his time in a chat room. One night she enters the chat room and after some chat finds out that Robert and her husband Jeffrey and now having an affair. Torned between her husband's cheating and her strong empathy for Robert, she decided to get another name for chat room and poses as Robert's ex died boyfriend and starts tall king about all the things that were intimate only between the two lovers.

Robert believes all that and starts feeling guilty for betraying his ex. He wants to end everything and hence one day just candidly ends up telling Elaine , how Jeffrey sometimes thinks of killing his wife just because he is fed up being bisexual. Elaine takes action after hearing that and finally what happens comes as a shock to audience.

From execution point of view, a few sequences are brilliantly handled. The way Elaine confronts Jeffery is beautiful. Plus the way Robert and Jeffrey get together etc. The landscape and the whole shooting areas are wonderful. Though the movie is great, I certainly could not understand certain things about the movie a) How does Elaine know so much about Robert's personal life b) What exactly happens in the end to the characters. The Dying Gaul in reality is a roman Greek kStatue and towards the end of the movie, Jeffrey is shown as repenting in the same pose as that of the statue.

I feel like I can keep writing about this movie. But I need to stop. It is a must see. (8/10)

Più bel giorno della mia vita (Italian) [The Best Day of My Life]

A nice movie after seeing a couple of bad movies. My faith was restored in gay cinema. This movie reminded me so much of another movie that I had seen which showed the problems of all individual family members when they meet at a family reunion. This movie has good acting, nothing over the top, no right or wrong about love. It just had different individual's perspectives.

Irene, a grandmother lives by herself in her house. She has two daughters, Rita and Sara and a son, Claudio. Sara's husband passed away after 2 years of marriage and she can now not trust any other man. She always worries for her son. Rita, who has two daughters, is living the end of her marriage and is in love with a veterinary surgeon. Claudio is a gay and his mom doesn't know it. He has a lover Luca who lives with him but still he cannot tell his mom. Rita and Sara know about this though. The family meets every occasionally for lunch. The movie is shown through the eyes of Rita's daughter who is soon to have her first communion and prays to God that everyone in the family should be shown the truth. How the initial formal relationship between the individuals, eventually turn out to be how everybody starts accepting each other more openly forms a good part of the story. The way Claudio's boyfriend Luca enters family and Irene starts to like her is also very touching.

The movie beautifully shows how all of us desire for the same things. love, companionship, tolerance and hope. The movie brings forward these aspects beautifully. It cannot be termed as strict gay cinema. It just had one of the characters as gay man. The movie tells about everyone's stories and does not put right or wrong for anyone. I liked the confusions shown in Rita's and her husband's life. The way Sara keeps worrying about her son. How her son feels cheated for not being told about his uncle's sexuality for fear of him turning out to be gay too. Irene's proud when she sees Claudio in the courtroom handling his case. These were brief touching moments.

I loved it. It was beautiful. Definitely worth a watch. (7/10)

Just Can't Get Enough

Let me clarify. This is NOT a gay themed movie. I saw it because I was under the impression that it is but thats not true. I am still going to review it just for giggles.

Steve Bannerjee is just another club owner until he stumbles into the idea of male strippers playing to a women-only audience. His cash register is flowing specially after the choreographer Nick joins them and the shows are more organized than random. Chad is just another worker in the club who does not like the idea of dancing but he is ready to do anything apart from that. But when it comes to manipulations, Bannerjee proves Nick's equal and then some: the sex, drugs, and rock and roll atmosphere of the club quickly gives way to a headlong rush into murder, and the ride is straight down all the way.

The movie was full of flesh display of both men and women. Chad was soooooooo hot. But thats all there was to this movie.

Not worth my time. (2/10)

Chun gwong cha sit (Hong Kong/Argentina-Mandarin) [Happy Together]

I had read a lot of positive reviews about the film and hence my expectations were quite high from the movie but sadly I have to say that I was disappointed. Not by the content but by the presentation aspect of the story. It had a nice and engrossing story idea but had it been handled more maturely, I would have personally liked it more.

Yiu-Fai and Po-Wing arrive in Argentina from Hong Kong and take to the road for a holiday. Their relationship is always under stress because Po-Wing keep disappearing and resurfacing again. Fai is more stable. They drift apart while they are on road but end up being in Argentina. Fai starts working first as a doorman to a local bar and then in a restaurant. As shown earlier he is more stable of the two. On the other hand all Po-Wing does is hustling. ONe day Po-Wing gets beaten up and he shows up at Fai's door steps. Fai starts taking care of him but something keeps him away from getting close physically with him again. Fai says that the best time they were happy together was the time was Po Wing was recovering and Fai had to take care of him as a child. He even wishes that Po Wing does not recover fast.Yiu-Fai and Po-Wing arrive in Argentina from Hong Kong and take to the road for a holiday. Fai goes back home and Po Wing is still shown broken crying repenting in Argentina.

The acting from the lead characters was ok. Fai's character was portrayed beautifully. Po Wing I thought was strictly ok. The movie I think was shot with hand held camera and the cinematography and other stuff needed a lot to be desired. The only good aspect was to see the relationship disintegrate in a foreign country.

Not one of may favorites. I would not go for it again. (3/10)

Outing Riley

One of my close friends recommended the movie to me. He knew my taste and was sure I will like it. And yes! I did like it. Its the kind of movies I prefer to see. Comic, drama, emotions, family etc. It was nice... very nice.

Bobby Riley is one of the four brothers and 1 sister Maggie in a Irish catholic family. Except his sister no one knows that he is gay. After their father's death, Maggie wants Bobby to come out to his other brothers Jack (priest), Connor (obsessed with Internet porn) and Luke (the prankster). Bobby though he lives with his boyfriend Andy, still doesn't have the nerve to tell his brothers even though he tries hard to come out to them on a weekend getaway. One evening Maggie throws the bomb out in open by showing everyone Bobby's and Andy's pictures and telling everyone that he is gay. From here starts the tribulations that Bobby, Andy, his brothers and Maggie go through and they eventually accept Bobby and Andy. Bobby's dilemma functions on both comic and dramatic planes because when he does spill the beans, his brothers assume due to his regular-guy demeanor that he's kidding. Besides, they're meat and potatoes Irish-Catholic, so Bobby simply can't be gay. But, everybody, it turns out, has a secret. The way Maggie tries her best to keep the family together even if it means telling a big lie to everyone keep you giggling.

Acting wise everyone is decent. The shot where Luke is high and shows his ass is hot! Luke was hot and nude. What else would you want to see in the movie. Chicago as always look beautiful in the movie. Its plain simple entertainment for folks like me.

You should see this one for sure. Feel good entertainer. (7/10)

In & Out

Funny! Funny! Funny! This movie was so much fun. I had a hard time controlling not to laugh at various occasions while watching this movie. The film gets into the mood right away and bears front the plot which is simple but hilarious, specially with the way things are handled in the movie.

A high school teacher Howard is about to get married to his fiance of 3 years, Emily. Everything changes in one night when a former high school student of his, named Cameron Drake, now a famous actor, makes an acceptance speech after receiving an Academy Award for his portrayal of a homosexual army soldier and 'outs' Howard Brackett as his inspiration for his role. Here begins the whole media circus where suddenly everyone in media is interested in finding out if what was said is true or not. Howard desperately tries keep his life from falling apart by protesting that he is not gay and that the whole thing with Cameron's speech is a simple misunderstanding. Everyone except one of the TV reporter believes him. The TV reporter who is openly gay wants to do an entire week special with Howard's story. Finally the day of wedding comes and thats when Howard instead of saying 'I Do' says 'I am gay'. This incident leads to Howard being suspended from school and other activities that he was doing. Movie ends with how Cameron comes back in the small town to help his teacher and how the people of the town accept Howard for what he is and everything is fine.

Performance wise everyone has done good. Howard, fiance Emily (she was damn funny) and all supporting cast. My favorite scene is when Howard is listening to this tape on how to be more masculine and when he just cannot control not to dance when the music is playing. The entire scene was hilarious and funny.

Definitely a worth watch. A comic, funny, hilarious joyride. (7.5/10)

Glue (Argentina-spanish)

This Argentinean film was a BIG disappointment. The director tried to portray the boredom in life of a 16 year old boy Lucas from a dysfunctional family living in the middle of nowhere. It also delves a little bit into his sexual experiments with his friends, the hunky Nacho and the mousey Andrea.

Lucas' parents' relationship is pretty unstable, but he doesn't want to be confronted with it. So he decides to spend his time hanging out with his friends, just talking about life and experimenting with drugs and sex. He wonders about his physical development, compares himself to his buddy, and begins to explore his sexuality. Not much happens in this dull observation of teen behavior in a small town in the boonies of Argentina. The events are mundane. The characters uninteresting. The overall quality is not much better than the home-video your friend did about distant relatives. The only good scene that I enjoyed was when Lucas plays with the monkey with banana. And the intimate scene between all 3 friends is strictly ok. I thought Nacho as teenage was very hunky and hot.

The bottom-line: don't waste you time with this one. (2/10)

Buah, Ha (Israel-Hebrew/Arabic) [The Bubble]

My first experience with Israeli cinema and I must say I was pretty impressed. The movie part in Hebrew and part in Arabic shows what the people have to go through because of war and extreme political situations. The movie starts with a scene from a checkpoint on the Israeli-Palestinian border. This confuses the viewer as to what kind of movie is this. But very soon the whole plot is established.

Naom, one of the guys from the checkpoint lives in Tel Aviv with a girl Lulu and a gay roommate Yelli. Lulu is in search of the perfect guy who does not want just sex but wants much more to life. Yelli works in a cafe and is shown as a fun loving guy. The story begins when Ashraf , a guy from the border while Naom was working shows up at his door. He lost his id and had found Naom's id. There is instant spark and the 2 guys ended up sleeping together. Their love slowly starts to grow even though knowing that because of Ashraf being Arab and Naom being a JEw , there is absolutely no future for them. Ashraf changes his name, starts working in same cafe as Yelli and lives illegally in Tel Aviv. Yelli is dating this butch guy Golan (Hot! Hot!) who is out and believes very strongly that people should respect for whatever they are. There is an activist in the neighborhood who secretly loves Lula but she has no clue. So in a nutshell, everyone is trying to find their love. One day someone recognizes Ashraf, so fearing that he runs back to his hometown. Naom is shattered because he is in love with Ashraf. How Naom and Ashraf try to get back together in the background of growing terrorism and political tensions form the crux of the movie. The movie ends with Ashraf being the suicide bomber and Naom decides to go with him because they believe that maybe they don't have any future in this world but might be able to live together beyond the clouds.

The movies is very touching, very well performed by all characters. The movie has a couple of love making scenes and all are done very very esthetically. Never before in a gay movie have I seen love making scenes so beautifully. It evokes love emotions in you. "The bubble" refers the people living in Tel Aviv who are strangely cut off from the ugly realities of what is going on all around them, which is partly why they seemed so naive. The movie focus is on Naom and Ashraf but it also does track on other characters.

A very very sensible film. I am so glad I got to see this film. A modern gay take on Romeo and Juliet. Very good. (7.5/10)

Sheng xia guang nian (Taiwan-Mandarin) [Eternal Summer]

The tagline of the film is very apt "No One Wishes To Be Lonely, Neither Do We.". Its so story not just in the context of the movie but even otherwise for every individual. Jonathan and Shane are best friends from school. They were forced in school to pair with each other but eventually turn out to be best friends who hang out with each other always. Jonathan meets this girl Carrie and they date for a while until one day he chickens out when they try to go physical. He realizes that he has hidden feelings for someone else. and that some one else is his friend Shane.

Jonathan tells Carrie about it and she understands but there is air of discomfort between the two. Oblivious to all this, Shane starts falling for Carrie but there is a conflict of interest with his friendship with Jonathan. Seeing this Jonathan realizes that probably he cannot remain friends with Shane for his and Carrie's best interest. Shane has always seen Jonathan as his best friend and is very scared to loose him because he is essentially a loner without him. When Jonathan tells Shane that he does not want to be friends with him, Shane's emotions are crashed and in a last minute attempt to salvage their friendship, Shane gives Jonathan what Jonathan has probably been fantasizing about his entire life: one night of intimate unification. This is the only way for Shane to tell how much he values their friendship. But on the other hand Jonathan wants Shane and Carrie to be with each other. Shane admits that he cannot function without Carrie, his love, or Jonathan, his best friend.

This movie is all about relationships, friendship and love. Heavy on emotions and inner turmoil being faced by all these 3 individuals. The background music of the film is specially very beautiful. A superb movie, I wish the movie is seen by much more people. Its sad that some of the very well made movies just go into some kind of oblivion.

Highly recommended for people who believe in love, friendship and dreams. (7.5/10)

Defying Gravity

This is the kind of film that I personally prefer on most of the movies. Its difficult to put this movie in one particular genre. If I had to say, I would put it as coming out/romantic movie which is totally my cup of tea. The movie per me is almost there where I cannot find a fault with it. Right from the story telling, to the characters portrayed, acting, friendship between the 2 boys, love and affection, acceptance by parents and community; it has just about everything with the right sentiment and right emotion. I have seen the movie twice already.:)

The story is about 3 friends Griff, Todd and Pete. Griff and Pete have certain sexual encounters without Todd knowing about it. Griff just wants to enjoy and live with the moment whereas Pete is falling in love and wants something more meaningful which obviously Griff is opposed to. Things take a dramatic turn when Pete is seriously injured and hospitalized after he is gay bashed. Griff stars questioning himself, obviously having these strong feelings for Pete. Story wise thats it. But the way the events are shown. All the time Todd trying to realize whats wrong with Griff and why is he behaving the way he is. Griff comes out to him in a very repentful way and accepting his love for Pete. That is one of my favorite scenes when Griff says how he never accepted the real love and he was always driving it away and Todd has this expressions on his face and asks 'Are you in love with him?'. Its a surprise of the viewers that Todd reacts so positively and is so understanding about the whole thing. Parental love for Griff is another beautiful aspect of the movie. I am a sucker for emotional movies and after Big Eden this movie just did it for me.

The final scene when Griff kisses Pete is the hospital is oh so romantic. It is the most powerful emotional payoff I've seen onscreen. I also liked the fact that Todd's girlfriend Heather is so understanding. She has always been in the background but for the viewers you have to realize how she has always been so accommodating whenever Griff needs his friend Tod. Amazing in a single word!! Oh!! did I tell you how good looking all the characters were. Griff specially resembled so much to this guy in my train whom I see almost every other ay and I have a silent crush on him.

Go for this movie. If you are disappointed, then there is something wrong with you. Its almost perfect. I am always going to cherish it. (9/10)

Breaking the Surface : The Greg Louganis Story

Its hard to classify this movie as strictly under gay genre. Or maybe its not. Because our primary character is gay and it does show the real hardships faced by him in his life. Based on the diving champion Greg Louganis on his book, the movie takes us deep inside how Greg's childhood was, how was his relationships with other people, how he became the great Olympic champion that he was and much more.

Greg Louganis is adopted child in his family. His father is not particularly fond of him as a kid but his mother does notice that he is passionate about diving. WIth proper coaching and mentoring, they make sure he gets to do what he likes. Greg's mother is always shown close to him and his father always being that angry man who is not too fond of him because he is not good at reading. Down the line Greg starts living in with a guy Keith and after living together for a while, Keith moves out because he is not comfortable with the fact that Greg would not accept that he is gay in public. Greg always lives in this fear that people wont accept him the way he is. Its shown that Greg has always lived in a fear where all he wants is people o love him , like him and he having a family around him. During his swimming classes , he becomes best friends with Megan who stands by him always. Greg starts getting gold medal nationally and even in Olympics. He meets Tom one day and soon they move together. Over a period of time Tom starts taking advantage of Greg by using up all his money, becomes his manager, and also cheats on him all because Greg cannot read. And ultimately after they find that Tom is positive, he probably is the man who made Greg HIV positive as well. Anyways ultimately Greg becomes the world champion with breaking all sorts of records.

The movie is very true to the book and depicts different phases of Greg's life. His relationship with is Dad improves towards the end when his father is dying and how he takes his being HIV positive status in his stride and doesn't want to hide things anymore. This probably is one of the reason he wrote his biography. The most touching scene for me was when a son and father come to get Greg's signature on his book and the son says that I thought I will come out t o my father by giving this book to read. Mario Lopez looks HOT! HOT ! (as always) and has acted the main character very well. Others are ok.

A very good biographical movie which teaches you how to strengthen your inner confidence and how life is about being together or each other. (6.5/10)

The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me

This film experience was a very different one. Whether it was god or bad, we will decide a little later. The movie is different in the sense that it is a one man show throughout the movie which is more like a theatrical event converted movie for audience. One man talks about his experiences through various phases in life starting from when he was 6 to when he is in his mid 40s. It includes experiences going to the gym, clubs, gay bashing, secret dreams etc.

Personally there was nothing for me in the movie. It started ok. I was a little interested initially because I had never seen any such thing earlier. In the initial portions I tried hard to understand and was getting into it. In fact the scene where he acts as he is visiting the gym was hilarious. I laughed a lot in that but after that it just kept going boring. The movie doesn't awaken you or make you curious and sit back and think because most of the issues are known to everyone. You just feel that this one man is very self indulgent. Though I must say that performance wise, it takes guts to perform such a role with all dialogues and singing. Plus to create a semi nudity effect on stage is commendable but still the movie did not do it for me.

Can be skipped. Its a poor excuse just to see first time a one man show. (3/10)

Mil Nubes de Paz (Mexico-spanish) [A Thousand Clouds of Peace]

Gosh!! Was this movie slow or what! In a movie of about 80 plus minutes, the time where there were dialogues was maybe about 20-25 minutes max. There were just scenes and emotions just shown were extended period of time in individual screens. Not that I mind them but then there has to be a limit. I tried to bear with all this for first half an hour but after that I was like, this movie is just not going anywhere.

From a story point of view,Gerardo has just finished his relationship with his boyfriend. Then all they show is him wandering around the streets of the city and being tortured by images from his past about which he can do nothing. He just wants to keep whatever he can of his dying love. Like I mentioned earlier, the plot has no relation to the lines the characters were speaking, acting was poor and it was a very aimless movie trying to go nowhere. None of the things in the film really connect to each other. The guy in the movie is as confused as probably the director was.

Just don't waste your time. Its enough that I did it already. (2/10)

Creatures From the Pink Lagoon

Yet another gay movie where they show a couple of friends spending a weekend at a getaway place for some reason or naother. The difference in this movie being is that there is some thrill element involved. Thats a different story altogether that the thrill was more like funny for me and by the end of the movie, I wasn't sure whether the movie was supposed to be comedy, scary, thrill or wanting to give you a message.

Near a chemical factory, there are 2 exits. One goes to the pink lagoon and other goes to a rest stop where men cruise for anonymous sex. It is rumored that some virus is near by the rest stop which makes you eat human flesh which is later discovered to be eating just gay flesh. Essentially they are gay zombies. At the same time, in one of the homes in pink lagoon, a group of friend are meeting to celebrate Philip's birthday (who is way too sissy). It includes Satn, the home owner, his impulsive hunky boyfriend Billy, his shy nerdy cousin Joseph and 2 others. They are attacked by zombies who have multiplied in number now. This group of friends figure out that the only way to keep these zombies away is a particular kind of perfume but the quantity is not enough. Ultimately with a bizarre turn of events all the zombies become normal after they listen to a Judy Garland song.

The acting from lead actors is very amateurish. The way they react to different situations is very childish and that what made me wonder if this is supposed to be a dark humor or something. Whatever it was, I never got it. Neither did it make me laugh, nor excited nor made me think. I was like I will see just because I have to see and nothing better to do. Thankfully it was a small black n white movie.

Avoid it. The movie was made just for the heck of it. (4/10)

Blue Citrus Hearts

This was a hands down bad bad film. Poor production, awful actors, terrible sound, very poor picture qulaity. Frankly I failed to understand the whole point behind the movie. Like someone mentioned "Think of all the horrible poetry you read in junior high, and turn it into a 91 min film. This movie was horrid". I finished the entire movie in like 20 minutes. I just had no patience to see the film as it was going nowhere. A few minutes of my life wasted !!

The story is of Sam, a young, dorky high school student in Memphis who writes his thoughts in a notebook and finds his homelife and his relationship with classmate Ariel spiraling out of control. The one good thing in his life is his new friends hip with Julian, a long-haired, pimply-faced, fey classmate who begins to spend a lot of time with Sam.

I don't care how many festivals this movie has gone into and how many people liked it. This on was just not my cup of tea. (1/10)

Two Brothers and Two Others (Canada)

I was a little skeptical when I realized that was a black and white film. Plus when it started, it was hazy, grainy and with bad lighting but I still wanted to see it having read all good reviews about the movie. And I think the 60 minutes were well worth spent. Considering that the movie was made on a shoe string budget, the movie eventually turned out to be good.

After their mother's death, Chad invites over his gay brother Riley to live with him and his girlfriend Tobie. Tobie and Riley instantly hit off very well with each other and she becomes his fag hag. Chad is shown to have some troubles when it comes to talking about his parents which is later shown was because of bad childhood experience. Because of this there is a certain stress between the 2 brothers but they still try to lead a good life. Riley meets Gavin at a bar and they start dating and son become lovers. But Gavin has hidden the fact from Riley that he is positive. Wen Riley comes to know this he feels cheated because he is scared of people getting sick and leaving him and going just like his mother. He leaves Gavin. Meanwhile, Chad's insecurities lead him to hit his girlfriend who leaves him and goes off. The end is a little vague with lots of open question but I think thats where the beauty of the film lies.

The acting from all 4 principal characters is very good and very natural. If the movie was made on huge production with same actors, it would have been a different ballgame altogether. This movie vividly depicts two brothers' quest for future from a problematic family who feel as if they are doomed and try hard to get out of this, but they have to go through the pain. This inner fight with their past and the weakness in their personality is the most attractive part of the movie.

Only the technical issues with the film is a problem. A very simple, decent film. (7/10)

200 American

What happened last night was the reason I started this blog. 2 minutes in the movie and I was like, I think I might have seen this movie before and yes it was true. Well but at least now I can put a review unlike last time and help myself avoid the confusion again. On the onset, a good thing about the movie was that it wasn't targeted at sex. It was a genuine story of men falling in love and showcasing a chapter of every gay man's life.

Conrad, a gay man , owner of an ad agency lives in NY and is a control freak by nature. This is the reason that leads to his breakup with his partner Martin. To get over him, he hires an Aussie hustler Tyler. After spending night with him, realized that Tyler is a nice guy who wants to become a photographer. He wants to help him and offers him a job in his company on the same amount that he makes doing hustling. Conrad still wants to make things work with Martin. Meanwhile Tyler whose real name is Ian (Tyler was his hustler name) is being approached by his supervisor Michael. Michael starts falling for Ian and so does Ian but he fears about his past. Ian tries many times to tell Michael about the truth but somehow is not able to tell. At a office party, things comes out in open leading to a scowl between Conrad and Martin who are trying to talk out things between them, and Michael who is deeply hurt. Ian is sad because he himself wanted to tell Michael the reality. Ultimately everything works out fine in the end when Ian tells him the real reason why he as doing it because he needed money to get married to a girl so that he could stay in the country.

Ian was very very cute. Actually so were Michael and Conrad. The good thing was it did not have drugs, abuse, murders, gay bashing or any twisted character. It was a simple story of love and what lie brings to you. There is nothing outstanding about the movie, but it is still much better than what other so called genuine gay movies have to offer though I fail to understand why the title of the movie.

A simple story told with heart. Definitely could be watched. (6/10)

Smukke Dreng (Denmark-danish) [Pretty Boy]

'Smukke dreng' ('Pretty Boy') is a film about a 13 year old runaway boy Nick. Rather than living with his mother who has a very active sex life, he decided to run away to live on his own. On his first night he encounters a gang of young men abusing an older guy. After that he gets the old man's name and address and shows up at Ralph's place. Sharing a common interest for stars, they live together for a while till Ralph's wife shows up and he has to move out. The film doesn't show any sexual activity between these 2 guys

Nick then starts working for an older guy Max who buys all the stolen stuff that the gang of young men steal and snatch. One time, Max refuses to budge to unacceptable demands of the gang and it results in his arrest for buying stolen goods after the gang reports about it. After this Nick has nowhere to go so he ends up with the gang of young boys. The gang is led by a girl named Rene who poses as a boy.Rene and Nick discover each other sexually and begin their love affair. Meanwhile Ralph keeps calling and wants to get back with Nick. Jealousy creeps in and Rene goes to talk to him but ends up getting beaten up. Nick goes to take revenge and in a turn around of events, ends up killing Ralph.

The story deals with male prostitution and there is little gay sexual activity, rather a lot of heterosexual activity. The performances according to me are below the mark and there was nothing actually that I liked about the movie. Way below average. (3/10)

Love and Death on Long Island (UK/Canada)

First of all I should make one thing clear. This is not a gay themed movie. There are just hints of the lead character idolizing a screen actor but thats about it. This does not qualify this movie to be a gay based movie. Nothing against the movie, but when I wanna see a gay themed movie, I expect something more and not just whats shown in the movie.

Giles, a Brit writer and a widower does not like anything modern including television. One night he accidentally get locked out and ends up watching a movie. He mistakenly goes to the wrong screen and is about to leave the crap teen flick till he sees this young actor Ronnie Bostock who immediately strikes his fantasy. From here starts the journey of Giles love and almost obsession towards Ronnie that makes him watch all his movies and travel to Long Island near New York. He plans all his moves and ends up meeting the actor through his girlfriend and befriends them pretending to be his biggest fan who has seen all his movies. Things are fine until one day he tests Ronnie's patience and declares his love for him when Ronnie is about to go to LA for his shoot. Ronnie does not take this positively and the movie ends up with Giles going back to London and Ronnie still living with his fiance.

The movie has some decent performances with some funny scenes where they show Giles getting used to all the modern electronics and the way he plans the entire thing to meet Ronnie. I particularly didn't enjoy the movie very much mostly because I was expecting something more surreal and touching after reading the movie title.

I might have liked it if I saw it as yet another Hollywood movie and not as a gay themed movie. (4/10)

Testosterone (Argentina/US)

Testosterone is the story of love and betrayal. Primary portion of the movie is shot in Argentina and shows a lot of cute sexy men. Dean and Pablo meet just for a hook up and end up living together for 9 months very much in love, until one night Pablo goes t buy cigarettes and never returns back. Dean travels to Argentina to track Pablo down and find answers to his questions.

In the process he meets Sofia, working in a coffee shop across Pablo's home. She advices Dean to stay away an do not look for Pablo. In the process Dean meets Marcus, Sofia's brother. They get attracted but Dean finds out that Marcus is Pablo's ex and Marcus keeps saying that Dean was just time pass for Pablo. So Dean asks Marcus to take him to Pablo. Marcus is still very much in love with Pablo and hence he wants to kill Dean. But he is unable to do so. They make love and finally Marcus kills himself. Dean figures something is wrong and looks for Pablo and now wants to kill him. Sofia agrees to help but twist comes wen they show that Sofia marries to Pablo because of her money. Dean then kidnaps Pablo and from what I could understand from the movie, kills him and returns back to US, now satisfied that he has taken his revenge for cheating.

Testosterone in the movie refers to as brutal male power including violence, highly sexual energy, vengefulness and compulsive behavior. The movie addressed the masculine characteristics associated with the hormone testosterone. It has drama, funny moments and some of the best and hottest man-to-man kissing scenes ever.

An ok movie which could have been better. (6/10)

Issues 101

After reading not so positive reviews about this film online, I Wasn't particularly excited about watching this film but it turned out to be a decent flick. Even though the movie had very low production values, gave the impression of having been made off a camcorder, it still was decent enough and made a point about frat life in US in college.

Joe is a college freshman who mistakes a initiation from a frat brother as hitting on him. BUt after things are clarified, the eventually joins the fraternity. Christian is assigned as his frat "elder brother". Things are fine until one night when Joe and Christian end up having sex while Christian is drunk. Christian keeps telling Joe that he is straight and did that because he was drunk. Ultimately later he accepts that he is straight but he has issues which he need to work on. A twisted lover triangle forms when the confused Christian turns a romantic weekend getaway with his girlfriend Kim into a double-date; inviting along his gay sibling Michael and "little brother" Joe. Trouble starts when Michael and Joe hit it off and Christian is left to face his own issues, straight or otherwise. CHrostian feels jealous for them but also he has to deal with his own issues. In the background they show Joe contesting for frat elections etc but this is the crux of the movie.

Even though they have shown what goes on in a frat life, I am not very sure how much of that happens in real life. Another problem that I had was the movie was at a regular pace but towards the end, it seemed they ran out of budget and the movie just ends too quick all of a sudden.

A slightly better movie, especially after seeing such crap movies of late, its your call to see it or not. (5.5/10)

Querelle

Why? Why? Why? Why did the director ever make this movie. Just about everything in this movie was bad. Poor performances, awful sets which look so fake, no storyline, poor cinematography. The saving grace in such films is usually good physical sex scenes but even that was not there in this movie. After a long time I had to fast forward and see a movie just because it was so damn boring.

French sailor Querelle arrives in Brest and starts frequenting a strange whorehouse. He discovers that his brother Robert is the lover of the lady owner, Lysiane. Here, you can play dice with Nono, Lysiane's husband : if you win, you are allowed to make love with Lysiane, if you lose, you have to make love with Nono... Querelle loses on purpose. Sound interesting but believe me it was not. It was a bad bad film. Except for the lead main character, all the other men were so un attractive. The movie is supposedly based on some book. I wonder what kind of book was that. The acting is completely theatrical, the sets are made out of cardboard, the photography is lousy and worst of all the script is vague, non-consistent and boring. There are some vague murders. Even mixing sex with crime and murders was just not appealing.

One of the worst gay movies I have seen in times. Just stay away. (0.5/10)

The Fruit Machine (UK)

What was this movie? A thriller, ode to friendship, love or about love for dolphins? I am still asking this question to myself. I mean its ok when people throw in multiple themes to a film but they are somehow inter-related but here the thriller and dolphins have nothing to do with each other.

Eddie lives with his family and shares passion for romantic sagas like his mom. His father hates him for being sissy and acting like girls. He wants Eddie to be more manly. Eddie is best mate with Michael, a street lad. Both of them care a lot for each other, are just 16 and true friends. One day Eddie's father hits him and then on Michael's initiation, they both leave the town. Michael says he will take care of Eddie. Here begins their journey. They go to a transsexual bar called Fruit Machine. Both of them witness a murder of the owner and manage to escape. The murderer sees them too. ON their run, they meet a singer Vincent in a party which they are just gate crashing whom Eddie is big fan of Vincent likes the guys and invites them to his place and they agree to go with him. Initially Michael agrees to get to bed with Vincent so that he can make money and take care of Eddie but later when Vincent refuses to give money, they run away. Meanwhile Eddie watches a dolphin show and gets very disturbed to see the dolphins being captivated in the tiny pool whereas he believes they should be in the sea. One such night he goes to the museum and plays with dolphins. The murderer reaches there and attacks Eddie. Michael comes in time and murders the killer in the swimming pool. He doesn't realize that Eddie is hurt. Ultimately Michael manages to take the dolphin away and release it in the sea but realizes that the guy , his best mate for whom he did all this is now dead.

Acting was decent. Personally for me I had difficulty understanding some of the dialogues because of the Brit accent. The only good thing about this movie was the friendship. No sexual tension. Just pure love, respect and care for each other is what was shown in Eddie's and Michael's relationship. Oh by the way! the murderer was actually kinda cute with his blue eyes :)

IN the reviews online, most people seemed to love the movie but it wasn't my cup of tea. The movie can be given a miss. Strictly ok. (5/10)

Coffe Date

Ever since I read the synopsis of this movie in last year's gay film festival, I have been wanting to see this movie. After having waited so long for the DVD to release and watching it, do I feel it was worth it? Oh my God!! It was hilarious and amazing. Just about perfect movie (at least for me). Now this is the kind of movie that makes me just laugh my guts out and also feel romantic at the same time.

Todd has been setup by his brother Barry for a man to man date with Kelly without Todd knowing the fact that Kelly is a guy and is gay. Todd who is straight shows up for the coffee date and after a while realizes what has happened. But by then both Kelly and Todd realize that they share same passion for movies and eventually end up becoming good friends. Just to freak out Barry, Todd brings Kelly home after the date and takes him to his bedroom. Barry completely freaks out and leaves Todd's place. Later Barry informs Todd that their mother is coming over because Barry told her and she wants to be there to support her son. Now the problem starts. Everyone starts thinking that Todd is gay. This includes his work, his family and his friends and everyone is very supportive except Barry who still freaks out. Tired of explaining everyone that he is not gay, Todd starts questioning himself. Meanwhile there is a twist that Barry comes out saying he is gay and thats why he has been freaking out all this while. The only way to clear his confusion Todd and Kelly decide to have sex. They do it and ultimately Todd realizes that he in fact is straight. After some awkwardness they become good friends again.

This movie was hilarious. There were so many instances where I was laughing uncontrollably. All the sequences where no one wants to believe that Todd is straight are just too funny. His life gets crazier every day. Plus when Barry comes out and says that he is gay, the way their mother reacts saying that Barry just cannot let Todd be the center of attraction is again too funny. There are other funny sequences when all women at work suddenly become like closest of friends with Todd and discuss their sex life, a female colleague asking about "backdoor entry" and Todd's scenes with Kelly's room mate. Every time Todd says something about gays in the initial days of friendship with Kelly and pretty cheesy and make you laugh.

Coffee Date is a deliciously funny and frequently touching comic examination of the nature of friendship and love and sexual orientation with some of the best writing/performances. It shows that its perfectly normal for a straight man and a gay man to be good friends. This was my idea of just the perfect movie. (8.5/10)

Love! Valour! Compassion!

This is a film that I enjoyed watching. A simple film which shows 8 gay men and them spending 3 different weekends with each other in one year and the events that happen in their life. There are stories that go around revolving around these men which touch your heart, make you cry, bring a smile, entertain you and then at the same time also make you think that any of these characters could be you.

Gregory lives in his old 19th century house in uptown NY with his blind partner Bobby. He invites over his friends for memorial day weekend. The story then later takes you to July 4th and then labor day weekend. Among the friends are Art and Perry who have been together for 14 years and are celebrating their anniversary; John, a Briton who loathes his twin brother James; Ramon, John's "companion," (who by the way was so handsome and attractive Latino) who is physically attracted to Bobby and immediately tries to seduce the blind man; James, a cheerful soul who is in the advanced stages of AIDS (his character is shown very funny); and Buzz, a fan of traditional Broadway musicals who is dealing with his own HIV positive status. Ramon is hottest and youngest among the group and tries to seduce Bobby and succeeds to some extent. But Bobby realizes its a mistake and then apologizes to Gregory who first gets mad and then gives another chance to their relationship. Art and Perry are still shown being so much in love and working on every day. Buzz initially is shown as the guy who just hates everything because he cannot have a lover etc but after he meets James, his outlook changes and they are shown to then share a amazing relationship.

Love between various pairs is both lustful, heat of the moment and as a more tender one that takes years to cultivate. Valour is shown for Buzz and James who deal most intimately with the HIV , struggling to live gracefully even in the face of a painful and prolonged death. Compassion in the fact that even though there are differences between each of them, they quietly help each other through difficult times until the end of the film.

This film for me was a feel good film, the ones that I prefer. It was humorous in parts with some very witty one liners. Very much recommended. (7.5/10)

Longtime Companion

This film I believe is one of the earliest films to throw a light on what actually happened when the HIV virus was discovered and how the whole gay community reacted to it. The film revolves around a group of friends who are shown related to one another in one way or other. It shows what's the affect of the virus on the lives of these people as it devastates the lives of our characters. As the film progresses, we are introduced to a group of gay friends and their mates, who spend much time together in vacationing on Fire Island, the gay resort, and in the hospital visiting each other when stricken with the unknown disease that has become a plague amongst us today. It is difficult to tell the plot as one specific story because there are many characters inter-woven but again, this has to be the arguably best movie which truly depicts gay life in 80s and the fact that how people reacted to it. Plus the fact that there can be true friendship even within gay community was very heartwarming to see.

The movie is true to life with some of the best performances from the characters. Everyone was great. In fact a couple of scenes did bring tears to your eyes. I personally was choking just to realize that there must have been people in real life who must have gone through a similar situation. I was scared to even think about that and this led me with feeling sad for them. The scene where a lover tells his dying partner that its ok to die and leave all the worries is the BEST scene of the movie. Another one when one of the lover is crying afer he knows that his partner has caught the virus is also very touching. Without being in your face, these scenes tell you whatreal love is all about. Some of the hospital scenes are deadly, scary but very touching in a different sense.

Today we all keeping talking about safe sex etc but after you see this movie, you will realize how serious you should be about i. Because you definitely don't want to end up being one of those dying characters in the movie. Interestingly, the title of the film comes from the New York Times' refusal to acknowledge homosexual relationships in their obituary section during this period. Instead, survivors were referred to as "Longtime Companions" of the deceased.

A highly recommend film for everyone to see. You'll come away with a different attitude about not only gay life, but the killing HIV disease. (8/10)

Love and Other Disasters (UK)

Now this is the kind of movie that I personally prefer. Romantic comedy with gay based theme, its just perfect.

Emily called Jacks by her friend works at a fashion magazine. She is roommates with Peter (who I must say is very cute) who happens to be gay. She tries to hook up Peter to few people and wants him to be happy. Jacks herself is seeing James but she is not very serious about him, James wants to be serous but she is just hanging around. One day an Argentinean guy named Paolo comes into her office. She thinks he is guy and tries to hook him up with Peter but Paolo tells Peter the truth but asks him not to tell Jacks. Jacks start liking Paolo but she still thinks he is gay. Eventually everyone realizes he is straight. Meanwhile Peter has this crush on some guy but after a long time when he meets this guy David, its not what he expected to be. Thats when Jacks tries to tell him that sometimes u have to give other people also a chance without expecting anything back in return. Life would be much better.

In the end Jack ends up with Paolo and Peter with some guy. The movie is very very funny at most parts. I forget the name of character but the girl who plays role of a friend of Jacks and Peter's is hilarious. She is shown falling for every other guy she meets. She is hilarious.

Cute looking Peter, a very hot Paolo and brilliant acting by everyone, this one brings a smile on your face and makes you laugh hard. At leas it did that for me. (7.5/10)

FAQs

I was very confused by the title itself but the lighting outsde a motel makes it clear that they mean FAGs and not FAQs. Story starts with a runaway from Colorado, India, who comes to Hollywood where he can be the gay person he wants to be. He starts making money as a porn star but gets dodged when it comes to money. On his way back , he is ambushed by two gay bashers and is saved by Destiny, a flamboyant drag queen. Destiny earns India's respect and he gets invited to live with Destiny in her small apartment, a place she shares with other gay people in need. Lesbian Girl Lester is one of them.Destiny sets down rules of the house: no drugs, be careful of straights, spend two hours a day naked in respect for your body, always use condoms, etc. Soon India meets Spencer. another homeless guy whom he gets attracted to and he also starts living with Destiny. Spencer and India soon fall in love.

India and Spencer decide to find the gay bashers from whom Destiny took their jacket. The jacket had one of the guys Guy address on it. After initial inhibitions, they go but when they confront Guy, India senses Guy's sexual confusions and soon India makes Guy realize that its ok to be gay and he should accept himself for what he is. Guy leaves his room mate and the three return to Destiny's ever growing 'family'. Ultimately the other basher also realizes how much he loves Guy and cannot live with him. Its shown very well the way the other basher realizes his love for guy and how he has to fight with his inner turmoil to accept what he is.

There is quite a bot of frontal nudity in the film but its done with class. A few love making scenes between India and Spencer are pretty nice. Towards the end they also show how Spencer even though he loves India, cannot accept that fact because he is afraid to be left alone and be hurt. The performances of the actors was pretty decent. I liked the drag queen's role best. India was very very cute. I thought he is not more than 18-19 year old maybe.

A decent watch. No specific message, it doesn't preach but it doesn't leave you bored and wanting for more either. (6.5/10)

Los Jornaleros (english n spanish) [Day Laborers]

Now this movie was something that turned out to be not as bad as I expected after I read its reviews online.I could totally see what these guys were going through. How much pains and what all a person has to go through to survive in a foreign country. In strict terms , this wasn't a gay movie except that one of the lead characters turn out to be gay. But I must say that even that portion is handled very sensitively.

3 cousins Tura, Pilo and Quique don't like it anymore in Mexico. They want to earn money so they decide to move up north to LA. heir Uncle Giberto lives in LA and they hope that uncle will be bale to help them out. To start an earning, they become day laborers and start working on daily wages. Then the movie just focuses on how these 3 brothers survive their daily ordeal, their dreams, their family. Tura meets a girl Maria on one such day. The 4 men realize that the girl has nowhere to go and so she also starts living with them and consequently falling on love with Tura.Pilo meanwhile meets a drug dealer who used to be a daily wage earner like them and now smuggles drugs. Even though everyone stops him, he leaves house and joins this drug business. Quique meanwhile is very confused about his sexuality. He meets a handsome art gallery owner but hesitates when he makes a move. Ultimately he accepts what he is and leaves his uncle's home to be with him. NO one like the art gallery owner.

A series of events lead to Quique being shot because of drug dealing done by Pilo. He is hospitalized where all these men meet again. They realize that the guy truly loves Quique and their perception changes. Ultimately hey all accept what they are. In the climax they show that since the men are together now, because of the hard work they have now started to hire daily workers and treat them well.

A very nice movie with decent acting by the characters, I like it a lot because I had no expectations. By the way, this movie was half in English and half Spanish. (6/10)

Get A Life

Don't even get swayed by the tagline "I want a straight lover who is gay just for me". 5 minutes into the movie and I was wondering what the heck is this movie. I am still asked to even tell someone that what a crappy movie I saw. What I fail to understand is that what was the intention behind making such a movie and then to top it, mislead people by putting in taglines which will make people flock to rent DVD and watch it.

I want to tell the story but there is not even a story in the movie. Jamie meets a curious bisexual at a sleazy book store where both of them are frequent visitors. The store gets raided once and Jamie ends up being with an old man Hal. The two who used to hate each other (Hal used to steal all Jamie's hot tricks in the bookstore) become the closest of friends and decide that there is an alternative to gay life. Ultimately its just shown how Jamie keeps experimenting and looking for that ideal guy in his life whom he ultimately finds out to be as one of his co-workers at the mechanic shop whom he always thought was straight.

Movie had bad production, awful acting. Don't even think of wasting any time watching this movie. Its bad..bad..bad. (1/10)

Butch Camp

This has to be one of the most funniest movies in the recent times that I have seen. And the humor is all very subtle. Its hidden in the performances of the lead characters, the way they speak, the language they use and their body mannerism. As the title suggests this movie is about a closeted young gay man Matt who is fed up with being pushed around and signs up for "Butch Camp", a macho-training boot camp run by a very butch lesbian. But there is more to this story.

Matt working in a bank is a closet gay who is no very butch and is fed up. He is also lonely and scared of loving. He doesn't accept what he wants with his life and just drags on. As a part of one of the exercises of the BUtch Camp, he goes to a starlight bar and meets a Janet who finds him sexually very attractive. He meets her then boyfriend Rod too through her. They hang out a couple of times and the fun begins of how Janet is after Matt and how at some point Rod thinks he is attracted to Matt. Matt can see ho ROd wants to be together with him but is scared to accept the realities of life and drives him away. But alls well that ends well.

On paper, this looks very ordinary but believe me, this one is hilarious. Matt uses a language which is very high profile words rather than plain simple English and the way he talks and his timing is just perfect. I could not control laughing. They way he reacts to his gay friend's comments, it was hilarious. Rod on the other side was very cute and added a bit of reality on the entire movie. I wish they had concentrated more on the Rod-Matt relationship. But that's totally my view because I am a sucker for relationship based movies.

But still overall it was a funny movie and I would strongly recommend it to people. (7/10)

Third Man Out

This is the first gay themed movie in crime/thriller genre that I saw and I must admit that I was very impressed with the movie in its entirety. This movie too like most of the gay based movies talk about just gay issues but this one handled the whole situation in a very gripping n interesting way. Oh and how can I forget to mention that our man Donald Strachey was sooooooooooo hot n cute. I just kept looking at him. Plus he acted well.

This is a detective story set in Albany, New York with a number of twists and turns. Detective Strachey is a gay man, well adjusted, living with his wholesome and tender partner Timmy who works for a senator. The action involves a gay activist John Rutka, with a penchant for outing political figures who are either closet cases or who don't have anything positive to say or do for the gay community. Rutka lives with a healthy life partner Eddie, and the two seem targeted for death by apparent candidates for Rutka's next outing computer magazine. Rutka engages Strachey to protect but both Donald and Timmy have reservations because they think that Rutka disrupts closeted men's lives too ruthlessly. Eventually he takes on the case when it is declared that Rutka is dead. After a series of events and twists, he solves the whole mystery behind Ruka's death only to be finally confronted by a shock in the movie climax which I am not revealing here.

This being my first gay crime movie, I think I liked it quite a bit. It got confusing personally for me at times but still it held my attention and had interesting twists to it. (6.5/10)

Kiss Me, Guido

Warren, a small time actor has an extra room in his apartment after his lover moves out. He is also five months behind his rent. His friend Terry goes ahead and puts an ad in newspaper saying GWM needs a room mate etc etc. In comes Franky, a 'straight as you can get' Italian pizza baker who just has been cheated by his girlfriend with his brother. Franky decided to move out of his parent's place and sees that ad. He wrongly thinks that GWM stands for Guy With Money and goes to meet Warren.

Around the same time Warren's ex comes back asking Warren to play a role in his drama. Warren asks Franky to act his new boyfriend so that he can make his ex jealous. Giving into circumstances that Franky doesn't have a place to live and not much money too, he gives in and helps out Warren. On the final day Warren hurts his leg and Franky who is an aspiring actor after much coaxing agrees to do the play This play situation is quite funny in the movie. Ultimately the movie just ends with beginning of a beautiful friendship between Warren and Franky.

The lead characters acted pretty decent Warren had cute dimples and Franky looked hot. The movie has reference to why Franky is referred to Guido ( Italian jock wearing chains who is bossy). Franky was very cute. The scenes whenever Terry comes in picture are hilarious. He acts so gay that it just trickles your funny bone. The whole scenes with Franky's rather and Warren landlady were just useless and did not invoke any laughter. Franky's mom had just a coupe of scenes but I found them quite funny. In fact the whole family was kind of wacho.

With a few laughs here and there, it was a very watchabale one and a half hour movie which definitely does not bore you at all. (6/10)

9 Dead Gay Guys (UK)

Kenny and Byron are from Ireland and trying to stumble through the streets of London in search of gainful employment. In their first visit to a gay bar, they find that a gay guy called Queen was found dead previous day. And the story behind that is that he was a bitch of a conservative Jew guy who has a big bed which is rumoured to be full of money and thats the reason they never left the bed. Kenny and Byron get their "employment" giving blow jobs to old desperate men in the bar.

However in one of these encounter, Kenny shags Jeff, an old guy so hard that he dies. So he is dead gay guy 2. And then starts the whole story that since their employer is dead and they need money to survive, they need to find out the money from the bed termed in the movie as 'The Bread in the bed'. A series of funny incidents follow thereafter resulting in death of 9 gay guys and 1 lesbian. FInally Byron and Kenny manage to get the money.

The movie I found to be pretty hilarious at times. It was queeny, obscure, outrageous but funny. SOme of the dialogues are lengthy phrases but then their explanations are so justified that it makes you laugh.

A good watch for the comic timing and the overall humor. (6.5/10)

Group Therapy

For starters, this one should not even be under movies. It is in fact plain soft porn. I don't understand why this one would be marketed as a movie.

This revolves around bunch of guys getting together weekly for similar sexual dysfunctions: exhibitionist, confused, solo sex, ashamed, and thrill seeker. Here they simply talk about their sexual problems. They try to help one another get over their 'issues', usually by having sex with one another as homework between sessions. I mean I don't even know what else to say. There was nothing in this movie except cheap sets, full nudist with complete erections, intimate one on one sessions. The only saving grace was that the guys were good looking and had nice bodies.

Even if you like seeing nude guys, we all have seen better. An hour and a half hours of my life wasted. (1/10)

Gefangen (german) [Locked Up]

When you read the synopsis of the movie you feel like this movie would be worth a watch. Dennis is a new inmate. Mike is an older black inmate. Together the two face hostile prison officials and inmates in their attempts to become a loving couple. Sounds interesting; doesn't it? But the overall result is a disappointment.

The movie is dark and comes straight to the point. Dennis come to prison for credit card fraud. The good looking young guy that he is, the prison inmates star harassing him and a group of 4 wanting to get into his pants. But Dennis has his eyes on an American prisoner Mike who are in separate cells on different floors. The story shows how Mike and Dennis try and sneak into enjoying each other's company. How they against odds try and be together. There is whole lot of frontal male nudity and man to man sex. It can be easily termed as a soft porn including a gruesome rape scene in prison. The performances are very ordinary. Overall the movie just did not leave an impact that I was hoping it would.

You can watch this movie if you want to see lots of penis, a really cute guy and some brutal prison scenes. Otherwise there is nothing in the movie. (3.5/10)

Queer As Old Folk (UK)

I was thinking whether it even makes sense to write a mini review of this documentary which was aired on Channel 4 in UK, but then I thought at least it will help me keep a record of gay based movies or short films that I have seen.

This one primarily talks about lives of some old gay men who came out when it was illegal to be a homosexual. It primarily talks about 3 couples. First one have been together for 44 years and are looking to get married in a months time now that gay marriage has become legal. Second is about this guy who is married, out to his wife for past 2 years and claims to have had sex with about 800-1000 men in this time ever since he came out. He still lives with his family, has excellent relation with his son and talks to him about his dates etc. He is not looking for any steady gay partner and is happy with his flings. The third couple is a old 50+ guy living with a young 20s student. Odd couple because people confuse them as father-son but they are very much in love with each other. Both their families have accepted their relationship because ultimately its their life.

I didn't find anything nice about the whole film except that the young guy who is a stripper was very very cute. An easy skip. (2/10)

Making Love

First a few facts. This movie was made in 1982. So we need to remember how conservative the society in general was at that time and how easy or difficult was it for being to accept their sexuality. Zach, the doctor and Claire, a successful TV producer are a happily married couple for 8 years. Their is such an amazing chemistry shown between the couple that they seem just perfect. This is until Bart, a novelist walks into Zach's office and arises in him the long-repressed feelings of attraction towards other men. Zach kepts getting drawn to Bart who for some reasons want to keep a distance from him. As Zach starts spending more and more time with Bart, Claire starts assuming him haing an affair with a woman. Not being able to handle it anymore, Zach comes out to Claire and after initial shocks and fights, they both get used to it. Bart was never meant for Zach. In the end its shown that both Zach and Claire and happily settled with thier respective partners.

Story sounds so simple but the way the scenes are handles is exceptional. The way Zach's confusions are shown, how he keeps getting attracte to Zach and wants something meaningful and not just one night stands. The whole sceen when Zach tells Claire is just superb. Making this movie in 80s must have been a big and a bold step. All performances in the movie were good. And oh!!! the guy who played Zach, was hot!! hot!! hot!!

Me being a big sucker for romantic movies and to top it if you get one highlighting gay romance, (and I dont mean a cheesy one) I am all up for it. A must see for everyone. It will touch you. (8.5/10)
